EFT, often know as ‘acupunture without needles’, is one of the more prominent techniques in the emerging field of Energy Psychotherapy. Based on the Chinese meridian system, EFT is used to apply ‘energetic acupuncture’ to alleviate both emotional and physical distress.
EFT is based on the hypothesis that all negative or unwanted emotions are the result of a disruption in the body’s meridian system. Through tapping on a series of acupuncture points whilst focusing on a specific issue, the protocol allows the meridian system to clear the blockages that are causing the issue, leading to an immediate shift for the client. Research shows that tapping induces a mini-REM state in the brain which helps the brain re-organise the way it stores and processes information. Tapping has also been shown to significantly reduce cortisol levels which helps with stress-regulation and improves heart rate variability.
EFT can be used on a wide range of emotional and physical issues and been proven to be particularly effective with phobias, trauma and anxieties though can be used to shift any unwanted emotional state quickly and painlessly. EFT can be practiced ‘on’ the client by the therapist though once learnt can be used by the client independently of the therapist to provide immediate relief when distressed.
Whilst EFT does not replace the client-therapist relationship I have found it to combine well with the psychosynthesis model and it is likely that it would have been one of the tools Assagioli would have included in the psychosynthesis toolkit had it been discovered within his lifetime.
